Author and poet Maya Angelou was the celebrity guest at the 5th Annual UAB MHRC GALA 2009 were she spoke for an hour to over 700 guests. Before her performance, she greeted a small group backstage which included U.S. Surgeon General nominee Dr. Regina Benjamin. Dr. Mona Fouad, Director of the Center and Dr. Edward Partridge, Co-Director, presented the 2009 Charles Barkley Health Disparities Research Awards to three UAB investigators Keshia Elder, OD, UAB School of Optometry; Derek DuBay, MD, UAB School of Medicine and Laura Kelly Vaughan, PhD, UAB School of Public Health. The annual event has reised $1.3 million during the past five years.
