More than $420,000 was raised at the American Cancer Society’s 2009 Hope Gala, held at Vestavia Country Club. This year’s gala honored Barbara Ingalls Shook, a local Birmingham philanthropist who lived with cancer most of her life. The event started at 6 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction. A formal dinner followed, which included a program honoring Shook and a live auction. Dancing concluded the evening, as couples swayed to the sounds of Cleave Eaton and the Alabama All Stars.
