Scores of young adults who’ve become involved with the Birmingham Jewish Federation through our Jewish Community Relations Committee, You Belong in Birmingham project and other venues teamed up with the Alabama Poverty Project and the civic organization, Catalyst to host “FED UP WITH HUNGER.” FED UP WITH HUNGER was a great gathering with a great purpose. It promoted awareness about the crisis of hunger and raised funds to respond to hunger in Birmingham and Israel. Proceeds from FED UP WITH HUNGER will benefit the Community Garden Coalition for Birmingham (CGCB) and Table to Table, an agency in Israel that “rescues” food and distributes it to people in need. CGCB, a project of Catalyst, supports community garden initiatives in low income neighborhoods to improve local sustainable food systems, provide job skills, lower crime and increase property values. Table to Table distributes rescued food to food kitchens and food warehouses throughout Israel. Currently, Table to Table rescues 50,000 meals and 240 tons of perishable items per month. Table to Table operates two food rescue warehouses in Birmingham’s sister city, Rosh Ha’ayin, which provide food parcels to over 100 needy families each week.Table to Table is one of 32 agencies funded by dollars raised through the BJF Annual Campaign. BJF representatives have visited Table to Table while in Israel and worked as volunteers rescuing food. Entertainment was provided by Josh Vasa.
